BookSirens

As you’ve seen from some of my previous book review posts, I’ve been given the opportunity to read a few ARC (advance reader copies) of several books over the past couple years.  For some of them, I was asked by the author to read and review.  However, a few months back I received a message on Goodreads extending an invitation for me to join a site called BookSirens, and after doing some research into it, I decided to join.  And if you enjoy reading and reviewing books, you should consider joining too!

On BookSirens, authors can post their books in order to obtain reviews on various sites like Amazon, Goodreads, and others.  Readers can join (for free!) and review the books (again, for free!) that are posted.  There are thousands of books available, from all sorts of genres, and I’ve been impressed with what I’ve read so far!  Some of them have been better than others, naturally, but I’ve been able to read some great works for free!

The amount of time you’re given to read a book varies depending on the length of it.  I’ve recently downloaded a few books that are under 200 pages, and I was given 60 days to read each book and review it.  For longer books, you’re given a longer time period.  I haven’t had any issues completing a book in the allotted time, but it is something to be mindful of, just in case.

From my experience so far, most authors prefer reviews on Amazon, but you can cross post your reviews to other sites like Goodreads, Bookbub (which I’ve never heard of) or any other site you would like, such as a personal blog.  The review process is incredibly easy, as well.  Once you choose a book, you can either have it sent directly to your Kindle (I just use the app on my iPhone or iPad), or you can download it in other formats.  A link is sent to your email address and you can redownload if needed, or leave your feedback once you’ve finished the book!  The site makes it easy to copy and paste your review across multiple sites, as I mentioned before.

All in all, I’ve had a great experience so far with the site and have enjoyed finding new books to read.  If you’re an avid reader like me, and like the idea of helping out authors by leaving reviews, you should consider joining BookSirens too!

Winter Soldier Scarf & Semi-Pattern

Happy Friday! (And also Happy Pi Day, for those of you of the geeky persuasion!) This scarf began as one of those 'I want to make something for meeeeee' projects. I'd been buried under requests for things for others (which is nice, don't get me wrong), that it had been awhile since I was able to whip up something for myself. So one night I decided I'd stop at the store and buy myself some yarn to make myself a new scarf. Allllll for me.  I chose the colors originally thinking it would be a Thor-inspired color scheme, but once I started working I realized it was more Captain America-ish than anything. Which works just as well for me.  And so, I'm dubbing this my 'Winter Solider' scarf, in honor of the new Captain America move coming out in April! (And no, I'm not being paid to plug this movie by Marvel, I just love them is all!)   I used three colors of Caron Simply Soft Party yarn, which I'd never used before but ended up ...

Bofur Inspired Hat Pattern

(Check out this handy dandy Pinterest ready graphic I made!) In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, one of the dwarves (Bofur) wore this really, really awesome hat.  I fell in love with it, and decided to see if I could crochet my own version of it.  Well, first I scoured the internet, hoping for a pattern, and when I didn't find one THEN I decided to make my own.  And since I know there are others out there who would love to have this pattern, I'm posting it here! PLEASE NOTE: You may make items and sell them using this pattern, but PLEASE link back to the pattern and credit me as the source. It's only fair! :) The Bofur Inspired Hat Pattern You will need: Red Heart Super Saver (I forgot the actual color name, but it’s brown, okay?) Valentine Crafts 2015 Roundup!

Happy Valentine's Day!  I seriously intended to post this long before now, but...well I forgot, okay? But hey, better late than never, am I right?  Right.  Moving on!  I decided to do a little something special for my friends this year, and I found an adorable idea on Pinterest . I decided I wanted to fancy mine up a bit more than what these were.  I snagged a heart outline from here , and then jazzed it up in Photoshop to add the color and text. All that was left then was to simply cut them out and paste them onto the socks! The brand I found had a cardboard topper, so it was perfect for what I had in mind. Aren't they adorable? I love how they turned out! And in case you want to use this idea for yourself, here's a printable version of the graphic I used!  To be honest, I can't remember what size I saved it as, but I'm thinking it's in the neighborhood of 2.5x3? (Or maybe 2x3.5? I don't k...
