A Day in Shatley Springs

A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Shatley Springs for the first time. It was absolutely beautiful there.

For those not in the know, Shatley Springs is in a town waaay up near the North Carolina/Virginia line called Crumpler. The land was originally purchased by a Mr. Martin Shatley in 1890, and it was in that year he discovered the spring. Supposedly, the water from the spring has natural healing qualities.
(Check out the History and Testimonial sections of the Shatley Springs website for more on all this. It's an interesting read, I promise!)

Roses at the door to the restaurant
Presently, Shatley Springs is an inn (they have cabins you can rent), and also restaurant. They serve family style breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can also order individual plates, but really, the family style is the best bargain. And it's delicious
Family style breakfast was $10 a person, and included country ham, sausage, bacon, grits, eggs, biscuits, gravy, potatoes and cooked apples. (I think that was all, anyway.) And as long as you keep eating, it'll keep coming.
Seriously, you will not leave this place hungry, I promise.

Anyway, I went to the Springs with some friends for the day, and took a few photos and such that I thought I'd share. Honestly, the photos don't do this place justice. It's so lovely and peaceful.

The Spring that runs underneath the buildings
The water at the Spring is served at the restaurant, and though I'm not entirely sure about it's so-called healing properties, it is really good water. There is also access to the actual Spring, and the water is free, so you can take some home with you, if you like! We saw several people doing just that. Water jugs are sold at the Inn, but you can bring your own instead.

Plaque at the Spring
You had to go down a couple steps to get to the Spring itself, as seen below.

The 'Spring' is basically just water flowing out of a pipe, ha!

Shatley Springs proper!
It's ice cold, and it doesn't take long to fill up a bottle or jug. Plus, it's free! :)

All in all, it was a great time and a fun day. I'm already making plans to go back!

As Seen on Pinterest - The Retirement Survival Kit

One of my co-workers recently retired. I'm happy for her, because she really deserves it and everything...but I hate that she's leaving me!  I tried to bribe her into staying. I even threatened to lock her in the office and refuse to let her go.  Oddly, she didn't like that suggestion.  Since she was set on this notion of retirement, I immediately began scouring Pinterest for some sort of cute retirement gift for her. I knew I'd find something there, and I was not disappointed! Fairly soon after beginning my search, I came across the 'Retirement Survival Kit'.  (Photo from Pinterest - original pin link ) The pin was a link to an eBay auction, but of course my first thought on seeing it was "I can do that!". So I did.   I really should have taken a better photo of it. But this is all I managed to get. So, uh, ta da! I changed a few of the items around (the original link was from the UK, so some of the items weren't available)...

Spidey Warmers

At long last, here is the pattern for the Spidey Warmers! I ended up not being able to get them to the boys til last week-ish, and I had to get their sister to take photos for me to post here. So thanks Jaimie!! Aren't they adorable? As you can see, I made two sets in different colors for them, but the pattern is for the red with blue trim. To make the others, just swap out the colors. Easy as pie! First off: much thanks and credit to the creativeyarn blog, as I used her free pattern as a basis for mine. Thank you!!!!! This pattern has not been tested, so if you find mistakes please let me know so I may correct them! --> Spidey Warmers F Hook Red Heart Super Saver Begin with Blue Ch 25, join (do not twist chain!)
